Current medical data shows that the rate of TMJD, or temporomandibular joint disorders, is on the rise. As saxophonists, we are even more at risk of developing jaw problems that can include pain, restriction, and difficulty playing our instruments with comfort and longevity. Derek Granger is a saxophonist and educator with firsthand experience with TMJ disorder, and has researched tension-free performance practice extensively. Dr. Sam Asthana is a former classical saxophonist who is now a board-certified general dentist, and takes a special interest in jaw joint and muscle health. In this session, Granger will demonstrate performance practice modifications and critical stretching exercises, with anatomical and functional commentary by Dr. Asthana. These are learnings accrued over the course of Derek's own treatment journey and also his doctoral research on how singers approach their vocal instrument. This is a follow-up lecture to part one, in which Drs. Granger and Asthana will introduce some of the unique challenges that musicians face in protecting their jaw joints, and will provide a deep dive into jaw joint and muscle anatomy both at rest and during saxophone playing.
